Unattended production over the weekend

Hufschmied-Customer MHT successfully uses special hard milling tools

Safe unmanned process thanks to doubling of service life

Bobingen, Hochheim/Main. October 31, 2024 – MHT Mold & Hotrunner Technology AG is a long-standing customer of Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme GmbHAfter optimizing graphite electrode production with material and process-specific cutting tools, the hard milling process has now been improved. With a tool developed for the requirements of MHT, Hufschmied enables the mold maker for the PET industry to produce more than 200 high-precision molded parts on one machine over a weekend without manning. The special tool from Hufschmied not only delivers the required high surface quality, but also has twice the service life compared to the previously used milling tool.

MHT Mold & Hotrunner Technology, part of the Krones Group, specializes in the development and supply of injection molding tools for PET packaging, especially bottles. Because a process for producing molded parts from hardened steel had proven to be unreliable, the company turned to Hufschmied Machining systems. The tool used previously wore out too quickly and could not guarantee the required dimensional accuracy of ±5 µm. Through tests on the Georg Fischer Mikron MILL S 400 U machining center used by MHT, the machining experts developed a special milling tool based on the Hard-Line product group. "HC2475100-35005" is a finishing tool with seven cutting edges and TL12 PVD coating. The tool impressed with the desired surface quality and dimensional accuracy as well as its durability: the process is now so stable that the machine can run over the weekend.

Previous success story

That MHT addresses a tool-related question to Hufschmied Spark erosion is an important process for the mold maker, and MHT has been using the special tools from Hufschmied.

“After successful tests, MHT Mold & Hotrunner Technology has very early on switched to radius cutters from the company Hufschmied and has benefited from long service lives and excellent surfaces for more than 15 years. We also achieve very good results with special milling cutters that are specifically tailored to our processes. We can therefore look back on many years of good cooperation," says Daniel Möller, Head of Production at MHT.
