Bobingen, May 6, 2025 – Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme has set itself the task of improving the production of copper electrodes for electrical discharge machining. The result is the C-Razor milling tool series. These HSC tools, specially developed for copper machining, reduce machining times, have long service life, and produce products with the best surface qualities and the highest dimensional accuracy. This is achieved through sharp, polished, and coated tools with optimized tool geometry and specially treated cutting edges.
Copper has some unfavorable properties in machining, which Hufschmied This is addressed with the C-Razor. The high ductility and tendency of the soft metal to stick lead to the formation of built-up edges. This phenomenon is exacerbated by the material's good thermal conductivity. The low heat concentration at the cutting edge can lead to work hardening. The consequences of the particularly stubborn material buildup on the cutting edge are poor surface qualities and increased tool wear. Effective chip removal is therefore particularly important for a copper machining tool. Hufschmied achieves this, among other things, through polished chip chambers.
Parameter recommendations
The soft structure of copper can also lead to unwanted vibrations during milling, which negatively impacts dimensional accuracy. Stable machine guidance is therefore essential. "When optimizing a milling operation, cutting parameters always play a major role alongside suitable tools and intelligently selected tool paths. Given the material's properties described above, this is especially true for copper. That's why we also provide recommendations for cutting speed, feed rate, and cutting depth with the C-Razor," explains Christel. Hufschmied, managing director of the Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme GmbH.
The C-Razor tool family for copper electrode production includes torus cutters and ball cutters with diameters from 0,3 to 12 mm.
