Bobingen, March 26, 2026 – On the occasion of Ceramitec (Messe München, Stand A6.307) presents Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme A newly developed class of tools is being presented: PCD torus end mills for machining monolithic ceramics and carbide. The first prototype, designated P150M, has 25 cutting edges with a diameter of 3 mm. The number of cutting edges and their special geometry enable milling of materials so hard and brittle that they can normally only be machined by grinding.

Manufacturing complex shapes from solid polycrystalline diamond (PCD) is difficult, but Hufschmied has also expanded its manufacturing capabilities in this area and opened a new chapter. As a technology leader in material- and process-specific machining solutions, it optimizes Hufschmied Now, the machining of the hardest ceramic materials, such as zirconium oxide or silicon nitride, is a key focus. The newly developed geometry of the "P150M" has two main objectives: minimizing the load on each individual tooth while simultaneously achieving a high tool feed rate. Even with a feed per tooth of around 1 µm, the numerous teeth of the new tool enable efficient and reliable machining.
Milling solutions for ceramic materials
“Among all our special solutions, this is one of the most specialized, but for those who need to post-process brittle ceramics, for example in the aerospace sector, our new tools finally offer the option of significant process optimization,” says Christel Hufschmied, managing director of the Hufschmied Zerspanungssysteme GmbHThe current PCD tool is the latest development in a whole series of solutions for ceramic machining, such as the Zirconator for the production of dental prostheses made of zirconium oxide or the newly developed tools in the research project “CMC-3D” for the production of turbine blades made of ceramic matrix composites.
The new class of PCD tools will also be one of the topics at the ceramics workshop at Rego-Fix AG in Tenniken, Switzerland, on August 27, 2026. Hufschmied together with DOCERAM GmbH, Röders GmbH and MHT Mold & Hotrunner Technology AG.
