Writing a really good application: This is how it works
Dear applicant,
my name is christel Hufschmied and i'm with Hufschmied responsible for human resources. Since I am also the contact person for most questions relating to the subject of training, I have already read many applications from trainees. Here I would like to give you a little help and briefly explain what is important to us in an application and how you can avoid common mistakes.
1. What belongs in the application?
Whether you apply by post or e-mail - the following documents must be included in a complete application:
- Write to
- Curriculum vitae
– School leaving certificate (in the case of an apprenticeship, the last three certificates)
- Job references
I would recommend that you apply to us digitally. In terms of content, an application by e-mail does not differ much from an application by post. Simply add all documents to your online application as scans or PDFs that you would also provide to us in paper form. It is only important to pay attention to the correct file sizes and not to send us photos or scans with a huge resolution. You should also consider which documents for the
application are relevant at all. You should omit useless information such as primary school certificates, a scan of your ID card or driver's license - unless the employer explicitly requests these documents.
2. The cover letter
The cover letter is the core of a good application. Here you have the opportunity to "sell" yourself and explain why you are the right person for an apprenticeship Hufschmied are you. Cover letter templates abound, especially online. I would like to recommend that you do not simply copy them, because you will certainly make the best impression with an individual cover letter. So it's better to do without the standard phrases and explain your motivation. Explain how you do the work Hufschmied present and what particularly qualifies you. Show us that you care about the company Hufschmied have dealt with. On our website you will find a lot of information about our company, new products and events. Maybe you even connect with something Hufschmied. Please make sure that your cover letter is not too long. It should fit on one page, because the number of applicants is often high and the time of your contact person in the company is tight.
3. The CV
There are also numerous templates online for your CV. Clarity is the most important thing here. When looking at your vita
an HR manager should quickly get an overview of you as a person and your experiences. Therefore, do not mix school, internships, work experience and projects. If you clearly categorize the individual points and stick to the layout of a tabular CV based on the American model, you are on the safe side. Whether you want to start with the latest events or proceed chronologically is up to you. An application photo is not mandatory, but can give your application a personal touch and arouse sympathy. However, if you choose to add an image to your resume, it must be a high-quality, serious photo.
4. This is how the digital application works
Digital applications via e-mail are the most common type of application today and offer many advantages. Last but not least, you save time and resources with an online application. But which file format is best? If possible, you should only send a single PDF file at the end. This gives the person responsible a structured and complete overview. He only has to open one file, has all the documents in front of him and there is no danger that a single attachment will be overlooked. If, on the other hand, you send five different files, you may need five different programs, which in the worst case may not all be available. So that would not be a good idea. With a PDF file you are also on the safe side as far as the layout is concerned and do not run the risk that the recipient does not have a certain font or formatting is displayed incorrectly. Programs with which you can easily create PDFs can be found online. When you have collected all application documents and summarized them as a PDF, simply send a short email to karriere@hufschmied.net. The e-mail is the envelope of your application, so to speak. The text in the e-mail does not have to be long, because all the important information is in your cover letter. All that's missing is a meaningful subject for the mail - preferably just the word application and the job title. An important point is your e-mail address: It should consist of a reasonable name and be from a reputable provider.
5. Just stay authentic In your application you show yourself from your best side - that's clear. However, you should not pretend. This is useless and comes to light in the job interview or at the latest during the trial work. Then it can be counted negatively. It's also important for yourself to be valued for who you are. After all, you spend a large part of your life with your colleagues at work. Being open and authentic from the outset facilitates teamwork and ensures a pleasant working atmosphere.
6. Let parents or friends read your application Especially if you want to send many applications at once, you can make a mistake. It is therefore best to have someone proofread the applications before you send them off. A second pair of eyes usually sees more. And if a typo does creep in, that's no reason for a refusal. But you should be very concentrated, especially when it comes to the names of the contact persons. Mixing up first and last names, wrong spelling or a wrong salutation - this can sometimes be embarrassing and also reduce the chances of an apprenticeship. In addition, the application should be complete in any case. What exactly is required is stated in the job advertisement.
7. It's worth the effort Unfortunately, you don't always learn the best way to apply at school. But if you follow all these tips, you will definitely get a good application. Finally, I would like to give you this tip: You can see immediately when someone has put in an effort with an application. So just make sure you have an attractive layout, avoid typos, think about an attractive cover letter and take a close look at your application before you send it off. I look forward to your application and wish you every success!
