Milling thermoplasts

Thermoplasts are polymers that regain their original shape after a cycle of heating and cooling. Polyolefins are part of this group with polymers like PE, PP and PVC, styrene polymers like PS, SAN, ABS and POM, fluoropolymer thermoplasts like PTFE, FEP and PVDF, PA polyamides, polyester-based thermoplasts like PET, PPE and PEEK, polysulfones, polycondensates like PSU, PES, PPS, PI, PAI and PEI, as well as all other thermoplasts.
With all these materials it is crucial to keep the milling temperature as low as possible. This can be achieved with tools from our UNIVERSAL-LINE and SHARP-LINE. Depending on your requirements and your machinery, the solution to your processing problem offers you a choice of one-, two- or three-flute cutters. This also applies to torus, end mill or ball nose cutters.

Why Hufschmied?

When machining thermoplasts, the main concerns are the avoidance of burr formation and the edge quality when faced with high feed rates. Hufschmied tools from the UNIVERSAL-LINE and SHARP-LINE are optimally suited to deal with these requirements and achieve a finish that does not require any post-processing.

Milling elastomers

Due to their elasticity, elastomers like rubber, latex or caoutchouc pose a challenge to both the surface quality and maintenance of cutting power of the tools used.
For this reason, mainly tools from the SHARP-LINE are deployed here, whereas the UNIVERSAL-LINE offers tools suitable for hard rubber.

Why Hufschmied?

Sharp cutting edges combined with low cutting pressure result in a minimal deformation of the elastomer.
Polished margins together with a large back edge clearance prevent the smearing of the elastomer onto the back of the tool. Hufschmied provides a large selection of suitable push-type geometries in Z1, Z2 and Z3 end mill cutters.

Milling duroplasts / thermosets

The duroplast/thermoset family includes phenol-formaldehyde resins (PF), melamine-formaldehyde resins (MF), melamine/phenol-formaldehyde (MPF), urea- formaldehyde resin (UF) and silicone rubber (SI). This group of plastics cannot be deformed after curing. They combust when reheated. A large part of this family consists of epoxy resins (EP), polyurethanes (PU) and polymethacrylates (PMMA). Tools from both the UNIVERSAL-LINE and the PROTO-LINE are suited to the processing of duroplasts/thermosets.

Why Hufschmied?

With duroplasts/thermosets, the main focus is on the avoidance of burr formation and the edge quality when faced with high feed rates. Hufschmied tools of the UNIVERSAL-LINE and PROTO-LINE have been optimised to that effect and deliver quality without the need for post-processing.

Milling expanded foam

Polyethylene- or polyurethane-based expanded foams of soft to medium hardness can be accurately machined using the DFO tools from our UNIVERSAL-LINE.  For the machining of hard foam material with high volume removal, you can also use carbon milling cutters from the FIBER-LINE.

Why Hufschmied?

Expanded foam should not show any tool marks or any impressions caused by processing. Tools for the machining of expanded foam need an extremely sharp cutter geometry to prevent any squashing of the soft foam material. Since the blocks of material are often quite tall, there is a requirement for long tools with long cutting edges or clearance. We supply these from stock.

Milling acrylics/plexiglass/perspex

For the processing of PMMA in cast or extruded form (Plexiglass/Perspex GS; XT), we recommend the use of our FRÄSEN PER PLEX product range.  These singlefluted milling cutters produce a mirror-like surface finish without the need for additional polishing tools or any other polishing action.

Why Hufschmied?

When working acrylics or PMMA, milling cutters and drills need to produce sharply defined cutting edges. For this approach, we supply the FPE tool system with a single-step roughing and smoothing cycle producing these very sharply defined edges. All this with a relatively wide range of applications and high process reliability. Ball nose and torus end mills are also designed in such a way that they are capable of machining workpiece bases or deep grooves.

Milling Ureol® (PU)

Nowadays, Ureol® (PU) is mostly used for mould making and fixture construction.  To cut these materials, we have collated a broad range of ball nose, torus and end mill cutters within our PROTO-LINE.  By offering a variety of coatings, we can take into account the wide variety of Ureol® (PU) materials and their inherent characteristics.

Why Hufschmied?

Likewise, for Ureol® (PU) we offer a broad range of ball nose, end mill and torus cutters to readily solve any potential processing issues. Specific cutter geometries can deal with pin and bar processing as well as machining deep cavities. And all that without leaving machining impressions or marks.
